What have we found at Pleasures?

A flue system excavated by Institute of Archaeology Students at the Pleasures Estate (SE 57).  A large copper kettle was likely placed over the vents at the top as part of the rum distilling process.

During the second half of the summer, I.o.A. students excavated a third building that was thought to be associated with sugar processing and the distillation of rum due to a worm cooling vat adjacent to the structure to condense alcohol into rum.  Some slave ceramics were recovered from within this building as well.  The most spectacular aspect of this structure was a unique flue system that was probably used in the evaporation process during rum distillation.
