CURRENT POSITION
Island Archaeologist on St. Eustatius and Director of the St. Eustatius Center for Archaeological Research (SECAR) www.secar.org. Charged with running a continuous fieldschool for graduates and undergraduates, teaching St. Eustatius History and Archaeology in all local schools (K-12) for 500+ students, running bi-weekly educational radio programme, monitoring all development on Statia with regard to impacts on National Monuments, guiding the Monuments Foundation and Historical Foundation in their bid to have Oranjestad listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and finalize Statia’s Monument’s Ordinance and have it enacted.
CAREER SUMMARY
Professional Historical Archaeologist since 1995. Excavation experience includes work on a wide variety of Colonial Period sites (i.e., more than fifty-five 17th-20th century slave, indentured servant, plantation, military, garden, tavern, church, pottery kiln, small farm, warehouse, cemetery, leprosarium, and underwater wreck sites) located in Virginia, St. Eustatius, Netherlands Antilles, Chichester, United Kingdom, Santa Fe, New Mexico and Natchitoches, Louisiana. Employed by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Department of Archaeological Research (D.A.R.) 1995-1999 and the Institute of Archaeology, University College London, 2003-4.
Public archaeology interpretation for several thousands of visitors while with the D.A.R. and all other excavation locations. Ongoing radio program broadcast in the Netherlands Antilles in addition to several public outreach programs on St. Eustatius, local television specials.
Practical teaching experiences have included instruction with several field schools associated with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. I have also instructed students from the Institute of Archaeology, University College London in the field (I took over twenty students with me to St. Eustatius). Ongoing fieldwork programme with SECAR.
Classroom teaching experiences include instruction in zooarchaeology (lectured, proctored and helped compose exams) for Dr. Joanne Bowen at the College of William and Mary. Similar work for Dr. Louise Martin at the I.o.A.. At the Institute of Archaeology, lectured undergraduates in Caribbean Archaeology with Dr. Jose Oliver and both undergraduates and post-graduates on the African Diaspora with Dr. Kevin MacDonald. Also guest-lectured on Historical Archaeology and Caribbean Archaeology at Bristol University in the MA in the Historical Archaeology. Developed Colonial Archaeology course for Birkbeck College in London for 2004-5, but was hired as Island Archaeologist on St. Eustatius. Ongoing teaching programme in Statia’s public and private schools. Instruction in conservation, artefact idenfication and cataloguing, and field techniques for students ranging from high school to PhD through the SECAR programme.
